MELLOWS, LIAM (1892-1922)

I did this illustration of Liam Mellows. He was a Sein Fein republican and was the backbone of the 1916 rebellion in Galway. He was born in England but  reared in Wexford. He was involved with the Irish Republican Brotherhood and was a volunteer organizer. He was  friendly Pearse and Connolly and with the leaders of the rebellion . He was active around Athenry during Easter week  leading seven hundred volunteers but due to shortage of arms resistance was futile and the intervention of the British cruiser ” HMS Gloucester” ensured their eventual defeat. He was executed by the pro treaty forces in Mountjoy Gaol in 1922.
