ASHE, THOMAS (1885-1917)

I did this illustration of Thomas Ashe from Lispole County Kerry. He was a member of the  Gaelic League and the Irish Republican brotherhood. He was teaching in Lusk when the rebellion erupted and he led the first “flying column” across North Dublin and County Meath. His most impressive victory was at the Battle of Ashbourne when he defeated a much larger force of the Royal Irish Constabulary. He died on hunger strike.
